Brenda Jones here, reporting for Wildomar News. Today, we’re sitting down with Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney serving the Wildomar community. Steve, thanks for joining us.
Steve Bliss: My pleasure, Brenda. It’s great to be here.
Today, I wanted to pick your brain about one of the crucial steps involved in estate planning. Could you elaborate on the importance of selecting an executor or trustee?
Steve Bliss: Absolutely. Choosing an executor for a will or a trustee for a trust is arguably one of the most important decisions individuals make during the estate planning process.
This person, or entity, will be responsible for carrying out your wishes as outlined in your legal documents after you pass away.
Consequently, selecting someone trustworthy, responsible, and capable of handling financial matters is paramount.
It’s also essential to consider their willingness to take on this role, as it can be time-consuming and emotionally demanding.
Moreover, I often advise clients to have open and honest conversations with potential executors or trustees about their expectations and responsibilities. This helps ensure everyone is on the same page and comfortable with the commitment.
Notwithstanding this careful selection process, there are instances where complications can arise. For example, I once worked with a family who chose an executor without fully understanding his financial limitations.
This unfortunately led to delays and challenges in settling the estate. Conversely, another client thoughtfully selected a close friend who was also a seasoned financial advisor. That individual handled the estate with meticulous care and efficiency, bringing immense relief to the grieving family.
Remember, approximately 70% of Americans die without a valid will or trust, leaving their loved ones vulnerable to lengthy probate processes and potential disputes. Choosing the right executor can significantly mitigate these risks.

Brenda Jones: Thank you for sharing those insightful experiences, Steve. What advice would you give to someone who’s unsure about who to choose as an executor?
Steve Bliss: It’s a common dilemma.
- I encourage individuals to consider close family members or trusted friends who possess strong organizational and financial management skills.
- Professional executors, such as attorneys or trust companies, can also be valuable options, especially for complex estates.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual circumstances. It’s important to weigh factors like trustworthiness, competence, and availability.
Brenda Jones: Wise words, Steve. For those looking to secure their legacy and protect their loved ones, Wildomar Probate Law is undoubtedly a trusted resource.
